My IT Background
There are a considerable number of 2006 Mac Pros, versions 1,1 and 2,1, on the market. These 32-bit versions are the ones limited to the Mountain Lion OSX. They are available with dual-core and quad-core processors either singly or in dual configurations. They seem such good buys at present – but are they?
There is a hack available, which isn’t that hard to implement, which effectively allows these 32-bit computers to run the later operating systems, but there are other considerations to take into account.
These are ‘old’ machines and some have spent their whole lives just chugging away video rendering or similar. They might never have needed internet access. Another point to consider is hard-drive space and speed. Is there sufficient room for your liking? Are the hard-drives of a sort you will be happy with, speed wise? Then there is the graphic card. You can take it as a given that a change of graphics card will be required before El Capitan will run. So there are 3 considerations here which could well cost quite a few bob to put right, those being: a wireless card (if required), a change of hard-drive (again, if required) and graphics card. The graphics card alone could set you back £40-70 alone. Once you take into account all these a more modern version might well be a better buy. Of course, along with the base unit a monitor, keyboard and mouse will be required (wireless or USB). Even so there are real bargains out there should you care to look. Some people are literally giving them away.
